Titan, the name for the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit, was established in 2009 as a collaboration between the six police forces in Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and North Wales to tackle serious organised crime that crosses county borders in the region. The mission of the unit is simple – to tackle organised crime groups causing the greatest levels of harm to communities in the North West.
The unit is comprised of five teams working closely together and includes representatives from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, UK Border Agency and the National Crime Agency. Those teams are: the Regional Intelligence Unit (RIU), the Regional Crime Unit (RCU), the Regional Asset Recovery Team (RART), Regional Cyber Crime Unit (RCCU) and the Protected Persons Service Unit (PPS).

The University of Chester has a newly formed Cyber capability and Facility within the Faculty of Science and Engineering based at the Thornton Science Park.  The Cyber Facility comprises expertise from industry and academia, covering areas in both teaching and research.  We continue to build up our programmes and are currently offering a Bachelor’s course and Master’s conversion course in Cybersecurity, with potential for apprenticeships, industrial training, and collaboration opportunities.
Further to our teaching, we are establishing a research base with interest in a number of areas, including software and cyber exploitation, network and operating system security, and software and system protection methods, including in hypervisors & virtualisation, system monitors, and underpinning intelligent or autonomic Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs).
The Facility is building on its connections with Industry, Government, and Policing, and it is a pleasure to work with members of the Cyber Security Cluster, particularly in the areas of research, case studies, and student placements.
